In 1206 AD, on Muhammad Ghuri's death, Qutbuddin Aibak was elected Sultan by the Turkish Ameers. He, thus became the first Sultan of the newly established Sultanate of Delhi.

This marked the beginning of the Sultanate period, which lasted for over 300 years, with five dynasties of Muslim sultans succeeding one another in Delhi, beginning with the Ilbari dynasty, and ending with the Lodhis.

Timur, the Mongol leader of Central Asia invaded India and completely ransacked Delhi in 1398, beginning the downfall of the Delhi Sultanate.
