Kashmir the last of the defiant states, had a Hindu ruler, Maharaja Hri Singh, but majority of his subjects were Muslims. In his hesitancy, he let the accession deadline pass without acceding to either India or Pakistan. The local population began to press the Maharaja to accede to Pakistan, and held a massive demonstration as a protest.

The Maharaja responded through Hindu paratroopers, leaving several hundred Muslims dead. Two months later, the Pakistani tribes men invaded Kashmir, and the Maharaja turned to India for help. India agreed, on the condition that Kashmir would acceed to India. This led to a military stalemate and the division of Kashmir.

The UN Security Council on August 13, 1948 called for an immediate cease-fire, and holding of a plebiscite under it's supervision. The cease-fire has remained in existence since 1949. No plebiscite however, has been held, and the Kashmir issue remains unresolved to date.
