Serious disagreements arose on the issue of which party should be forming the Government. This resulted in street agitation and a non-cooperation movement in East-Pakistan.

  Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's PPP won the majority votes in West Pakistan  

India, and the Hindus living in East Pakistan, exploited Pakistan's dilemma to the full. They supported the creation of a separate Bangladesh, in the territory constituting East Pakistan. Bangladesh became independent in January 1972, and was recognized by Pakistan in 1974.
