Georgia was annexed by Russia in 1801, was briefly independent in 1920-21, conquered by the Bolshevik Communists, then once again independent in 1991. Georgia's first president stoked hatred against non-Georgian minorities, resulting in three wars. Georgia and neighboring Armenia are surrounded by Muslim ethnic groups, and since independence some Orthodox leaders have sought to deny non-Orthodox Christians the opportunity for open evangelism. Sadly, Georgian racial pride has antagonized the ethnic minorities, and they will probably be better reached by foreigners.
