Hungary was once part of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire, but after losing World War I lost most of its land. A Soviet-orchestrated coup brought the Communist Party to power in 1947. In 1956 the Hungarians sought to establish a more democratic government, but Soviet tanks crushed the revolt, and thousands were killed. In 1990, the nation abandoned Communism
and democratically elected a new government.

Hungary has religious freedom, but evangelicals are a small minority and the larger
denominations are stagnant and scarred by Communism.
