 개역개정 이는 과거에 원한이 없이 부지중에 살인한 자가 그 곳으로 도피하게 하기 위함이며 그 중 한 성읍으로 도피한 자가 그의 생명을 보전하게 하기 위함이라
 KJV That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
 NIV to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if he had unintentionally killed his neighbor without malice aforethought. He could flee into one of these cities and save his life.
 공동번역 평소에 앙심을 품은 일도 없이 실수로 동족을 죽인 살인자가 피신 할 곳으로 삼았다. 그런 경우 그는 이 성읍들 가운데 어디에든지 피신하면 목숨을 건질 수 있었다.

 Afr1953 sodat hy wat 'n doodslag begaan het, daarheen kon vlug, wat sy naaste sonder opset doodgeslaan het, terwyl hy hom van gister en eergister af nie vyandig was nie; sodat hy in een van hierdie stede kan vlug en in die lewe bly.
