After the assassination of Liaquat Ali Khan in 1951, a phase of quick change of governments followed. The first constitution of Pakistan was put into effect in March 1956, declaring Pakistan an Islamic Republic.

In 1958, Martial Law was imposed by Field Marshall Ayub Khan, who became President in 1962, and announced a new constitution. In 1965, skirmishes in the Rann of Kutch flared up, leading to a war with India. A cease-fire came into effect on September 23, under the auspices of the United Nations. |
